How much interpersonal communication Skills are required in dental assisting?
I job shadowed one for a couple days but he didnt display a lot of talking outside explaining procedures and what he was doing. I have some interpersonal difficulties but this job seems interesting to me. I would like to get into dental hygenist eventually as I spent the rest of my 4 or 5 days shadowing them. I’m also enrolled in dental assisting school at Portland Community College and intend on doing more shadowing
I am a dentist and I actually started as a dental assistant. I will tell you that a valuable dental assistant is one with GREAT interpersonal skills. Remember, dentistry is a business which people hate-they are scared and feel out of control. One of the main jobs of the dental assistant or dental hygienist is to comfort the patient and make them feel safe and reassured. If you are a quiet person or not good with people, I would not recommend this type of career. Unfortunately, many dentists are like that and it makes for the continuation of the “Fear of the dentist.” It is imperative to be able to relate to a patient and make them feel confident in your abilities as both a dental assistant and a dentist. If you don’t feel like you can overcome your interpersonal skill difficulties, then you may want to reconsider. If you can, then you will enjoy dentistry and the interaction you have with your patients-they actually start to become part of your Friends and family! Good luck!
